Always check it before you use it. AI describes what it thinks it sees. It cannot know who someone is,
where a photo was taken, or why the image matters on your page — and it sometimes gets things plainly wrong.
A confidently wrong description is worse for a blind reader than no description, so treat this as a first draft, not a finished one.
What makes alt text good:
- Say what matters, not everything. Describe why the image is on the page.
- Skip "image of" / "picture of". Screen readers already announce it's an image.
- Read out any text in the image. Text inside a graphic is invisible to a screen reader.
- Keep it short — usually under about 125 characters. Use a long description for charts and complex images.
- Decorative images get empty alt (
alt="") so screen readers skip them entirely. - Don't guess names or places. If you know them and they matter, add them yourself — that's the bit only you can do.
