How AI-Ready Are You Really? A Self-Assessment for Professionals

Ask professionals to rate their AI ability and you get a bimodal mess. Some rate themselves expert because they use ChatGPT daily for email. Others rate themselves beginner despite having automated half their job.

Self-report is unreliable. Behaviour isn't. Here are twelve questions about what you actually do, and what each reveals.

Foundations

1. When you get a poor result, do you know why?

If your response to bad output is to try again with slightly different words, you're guessing. If you can identify the missing element — no context, no example, unclear format — you understand the mechanism.

2. Do you give examples in your prompts?

Showing beats describing. "Write it like this [example]" outperforms any set of adjectives. Most people never do this, and it's the single biggest quality jump available.

3. Do you ever ask the AI to ask you questions first?

"Before answering, ask me five questions that would improve your response." People who use this regularly are operating at a different level from those who fire one-shot requests.

Judgment

4. Can you name something AI told you that was wrong?

If you can't, you either haven't used it enough or haven't been checking. Both are problems. Everyone with real usage has caught confident fabrications.

5. Do you have a rule for what you always verify?

Numbers, names, citations, legal claims. If verification is a vague intention rather than a rule, you'll skip it exactly when you're busy — which is when it matters.

6. Do you know what you must not paste into a public AI tool?

Client data, personal information, unreleased financials, anything under NDA. If you've never thought about this, you may already have a problem.

Integration

7. How many hours would you lose per week if AI tools vanished?

Under one hour means you're an occasional user regardless of how impressed you are. Five or more means it's genuinely embedded.

8. Do you have saved prompts you reuse?

If you rewrite from scratch every time, nothing compounds. A prompt library is the clearest marker of a systematic user.

9. Do you use more than one tool deliberately?

Not collecting tools — choosing them. A research tool for sourced answers, an assistant for drafting, something role-specific. Using one tool for everything caps your ceiling.

Leverage

10. Have you taught someone else?

Teaching exposes the gap between doing something and understanding it. It's also how influence accumulates in an organisation.

11. Have you changed a process, or only sped up tasks?

Speeding up an existing report is good. Realising the report exists to answer four questions and replacing it entirely is a different level.

12. Can you point to a measurable result?

"This took five days, now it takes one." If you can't produce a sentence like this, your capability isn't yet visible to anyone who makes decisions about you.

Reading Your Answers

Most professionals who've used AI for a year sit in the third group — competent, unsystematic, and unaware there's a further stage.

A More Rigorous Version

Twelve questions you grade yourself on are still self-assessment. Our free AI Readiness Score is built to avoid that problem — behavioural questions rather than confidence ratings, role-specific, calibrated for South and Southeast Asian workplaces, with AI-generated feedback at the end.

It takes about ten minutes and it's free. Most people score lower than expected, which is exactly what makes it useful.

Once you know your gaps, our AI for Professionals programme is built to close them in four weeks, alongside the other AI courses we run in Sri Lanka.

Cocoon runs AI training programmes for professionals and teams across Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia — practical, role-specific, and built around real work. Talk to us about your team.
