That puzzle appears in a Latin manuscript attributed to Alcuin of York — scholar at Charlemagne's court, around the year 800. - State thinking. Good solvers stop seeing items and start seeing states — safe configurations connected by legal moves. That mental shift, from things to systems, is the foundation of programming, logistics, and honestly most strategic work.
Computer scientists love these puzzles because they're miniature state-space searches — the same formal structure as route planning and puzzle-solving algorithms. Alcuin, eleven centuries early, had written a textbook problem in graph theory.

The puzzle's pedagogical genius is its feedback loop: break a constraint and the goat is immediately, visibly eaten. No grader, no delay, no ambiguity — the consequences teach, instantly, and failure costs nothing but a restart.
