Why Your AI Prompts Don't Work — and the 5-Minute Fix

"I tried ChatGPT. It gives generic answers." We hear this in almost every training session we run — from marketers, accountants, teachers, founders. The tool gets blamed, sometimes the whole technology.

But when we ask to see the prompt, it's nearly always one of the same five failures. None of them takes more than a minute to fix.

Failure 1: The Ask Is Vague

"Help me with my presentation." Help how? Outline it? Punch up the opening? Cut it to ten minutes? The model can't choose your intent, so it hedges — and hedging reads as generic.

Fix: one concrete verb, one deliverable. "Rewrite the opening two slides to lead with the cost-saving number."

Failure 2: The Context Lives in Your Head

You know your audience is sceptical, your boss hates jargon, and last quarter's numbers were bad. The model knows none of it, so it writes for a generic audience in a vacuum — and you read the result as "generic". It is. You made it that way.

Fix: spend two sentences on who this is for and what situation it lands in. Context is the single highest-return minute in prompting.

Failure 3: No Definition of Done

No length, no format, no structure — so you get the default: a five-paragraph essay with a cheerful conclusion. Then you spend ten minutes editing it into the table you actually needed.

Fix: say what the output looks like. "A two-column table: objection, response." "Three subject lines under 50 characters." Shape is free to ask for and expensive to fix afterwards.

Failure 4: Everything in One Giant Prompt

"Analyse this data, find the trends, write a report, make it engaging, also suggest a strategy." Five jobs, one prompt, mediocre results on all five — long multi-task prompts blur focus and invite the model to skim.

Fix: chain instead of pile. First "list the three biggest trends in this data", then "draft a one-page summary of trend #2 for the board". Each step's output improves the next step's input.

Failure 5: Accepting the First Draft

The first response is the opening bid, not the final answer. People who get great results treat AI like a fast colleague: "shorter", "more sceptical tone", "now as bullet points", "you invented that statistic — remove it".

Fix: budget for two follow-ups on anything that matters. Iteration isn't failure; it's the workflow.

The 5-Minute Method

Next time an answer disappoints, don't retype the same prompt harder. Run this checklist:

1. Is there one concrete verb and deliverable? (1 min)
2. Did I give two sentences of context the model couldn't know? (2 min)
3. Did I describe the output format? (30 sec)
4. Am I asking one job or five? (30 sec)
5. Have I pushed back on the draft at least once? (1 min)

Five minutes, and in our workshops it turns "AI gives generic answers" into "oh — it was me" for roughly nine people out of ten.
