How to Introduce Kids to AI (Safely, Through Play)
Your kids will grow up with AI regardless of what you decide. The only real question is which relationship they form with it: directors who tell it what to do, question its answers and understand its limits — or consumers who accept whatever it generates because it sounds confident.
That split is forming now, in childhood, mostly by accident. Here's how to make it deliberate, without lectures, without fear — and without pretending the concerns aren't real.
The Goal Isn't "Early Coder". It's Early Scepticism + Early Agency
Two instincts, installed young, cover most of what matters:
- Agency: "This is a tool. I tell it what to do, and how I ask changes what I get." A child who has felt a prompt improve through their own revisions can never quite see AI as magic again.
- Scepticism: "It sounds sure even when it's wrong." A child who has personally caught an AI making something up — and laughed at it — has an antibody most adults still lack.
Both instincts are learned by doing, at low stakes, which makes play the correct classroom. (This is our thesis for adults too — it's how Block Lab works — kids just take to it faster.)
A Progression by Age
Ages 6–9: AI as a toy you steer, together
Everything co-piloted, on your device, with you present. Make up silly story prompts together and watch what changes when you change the ask. Play the "catch the robot being wrong" game — ask the AI about something the child knows deeply (their favourite animal, a local place) and celebrate every error found. You're building the two instincts as one game.
Ages 9–12: structured play, gentle rules
This is the sweet spot for game-based tools. Add AI or Not to their feed diet: a daily game that trains them to spot generated images and text — arguably the single most protective skill a teenager can carry into their social feeds, alongside scam reflexes.
The Safety Rails, Plainly
- Privacy is non-negotiable and modelled by you. Kids share what parents share. Narrate your own restraint: "I'm not putting your school's name in here."
- Prefer tools with nothing behind them. No accounts, no chat with humans, no purchases — one reason we keep our games account-free.
- Companionship needs watching. AI chatbots-as-friends is the genuinely fraught frontier for kids. Steer toward AI as tool and toy, away from AI as confidant — the distinction is worth an explicit family conversation.
- Co-play beats surveillance. Fifteen minutes playing together teaches more than any monitoring app, and keeps you the person they ask when something gets weird.
