We Turned AI Learning Into an RPG Set in Kandy

Most AI education looks the same: a video course, a slide deck, a certificate at the end. We teach AI for a living, and even we glaze over. So we tried the opposite experiment: what if learning AI felt like starting an adventure game — a world, mentors, missions, and skills you earn by using them?

The result is Chatterbox (you'll also see it called Cocoon Quest): a free learning RPG set in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Here's why we built it the way we did.

Why an RPG, of All Things

Games teach skills better than lectures — feedback, safe failure, voluntary repetition; we've made that argument across our whole arcade (the design science). But RPGs specifically add the two ingredients the rest of the genre lacks:

• Narrative memory. People forget bullet points in days and remember stories for years — the effect is robust and huge. Wrap a skill inside a quest with characters and stakes, and the skill rides the story into long-term memory.
• Identity momentum. In an RPG you're not "studying" — you're becoming someone: taking on missions, levelling up, being treated by the world as capable. For the many people whose relationship with AI is anxiety (we wrote about you, kindly), stepping into a character who's learning is far easier than admitting you're a beginner. The mask does the emotional heavy lifting.

Why Kandy

Because nobody sets anything in Kandy, and that's exactly backwards.

Almost all AI education radiates from San Francisco — its examples, its offices, its assumptions. For a learner in South Asia, that framing whispers this technology happens elsewhere, to other people. Setting the game in the hills of Kandy — our home region, temples and tuk-tuks and monsoon light — reverses the whisper: AI is a thing you learn here, in a world that looks like yours. (The same conviction runs through our Challenge Run levels and our whole SEA-calibrated readiness score: this region isn't the audience for someone else's future.)

Also, frankly: it's beautiful, and games are allowed to be beautiful.

How the Learning Is Smuggled

The design rule we held ourselves to: the mission is the lesson. You don't watch a video about prompting and then take a quiz — a mentor character gives you a problem that only a well-crafted instruction can solve, and the world reacts to your attempt. Meet mentors, take on missions, and the AI skills you collect are the ones the story needed: asking precisely, iterating on failure, judging outputs.

Mentors matter more than we expected. A named character who believes in you, gives you the next appropriately-sized challenge, and reacts when you succeed — that's a scaffold no course platform replicates. (Every good teacher already knew this; we just put it in a game.)
