Why We Built SignBridge, a Free Sign Language Tool

Cocoon is an AI training company. We teach professionals and teams to work with AI, we maintain a directory of 1,530 AI tools, and we build free tools about prompting, automation and readiness. So the question we get about SignBridge — our free sign language learning app — is a fair one: why is this here?

Here's the actual answer.

It Started With a Simple Observation

We spend our days telling companies that the future of work is changing and everyone deserves a way in. It's the whole premise of upskilling. But "everyone deserves a way in" rings hollow if the only barriers you care about are technological ones.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing people face a communication barrier at nearly every counter, clinic, classroom and workplace — not because bridging it is hard, but because almost no hearing person ever learns even ten signs. The friction isn't ability. It's that starting was never made easy: classes are scarce, apps are paywalled, and there's no low-pressure way to simply try.

Making things easy to try is, as it happens, exactly what we do all day. We just usually do it for prompting.

Sustainability That Ships

Every company now has a sustainability page. Most are pledges. We wanted ours to compile.

So Cocoon's social sustainability initiative became a rule: a portion of what we build must serve people the market doesn't serve, free, forever. SignBridge is one product of that rule. The A11y Widget — 33+ accessibility features for any website, open-source, no tracking — is another. The Alt Text Writer is a third. None of them has a business model. That's the point. (Our candid take on the accessibility-overlay industry that does have a business model is here.)

Why a Web App, Specifically

The design decisions in SignBridge all trace back to removing the friction we diagnosed:

What We Hope Happens

Modest things, at scale. A shop assistant in Kandy who can sign "thank you". A teacher who greets a deaf parent properly at pickup. A team that spends one lunch break on SignBridge together because it was free and easy and someone shared the link. None of these changes the world; all of them change an interaction — and interactions are where inclusion actually lives.

The full beginner's path — including the honest caveats about regional sign languages — is in Learn Sign Language Online, Free: Where to Start.

And if you run a company: steal the rule. One thing, built properly, free forever, for people the market skips. It costs less than the sustainability page implies and does more. Here's ours →
